6. Keep some shades, blinds up and curtains open to maintain a normal, everyday appearance in your residence.
7. Do not leave a message on your answering machine telling people that you are away. A message that you will return at a certain time leaves your home vulnerable in the mean time.
8. Keep bushes trimmed away from entrances and pathways. While big, ornate hedges may well be beautiful, they also are a great hiding place for burglars who only need a minute to break in through a door or window.
9. Organize a community watch program to protect your homes. An alert community is a much safer community. Home security is the best way to reduce your chances of being burgled. A lot of burglaries are spur of the moment, as a burglar may see an open window or other easy point of entry and take their chance.
10. When taking a taxi or minicab to leave your home don't arrange to be picked up at your address. Ask them to pick you up at a corner, or nearby point.
